Packing Your Hospital Bag Like a Pro: A Sisterly Guide from Your Doula

Packing Your Hospital Bag Like a Pro: A Sisterly Guide from Your Doula

Hey Mama,

You’re almost there! Can you believe it? After months of nurturing that beautiful life inside of you, the big day is just around the corner. I’m sure you’re in your third trimester of pregnancy. You can go into labor in the next hour, next few days, or next few weeks. I know there’s probably a whirlwind of thoughts running through your mind, and one of the most pressing questions is likely, “What do I actually need to pack in my hospital bag?” As your friendly doula, let me help you with that. We’re not just talking the essentials—we’re making sure you feel comfortable, prepared, and empowered. So, let’s get into it.

Which Comfort Items to Include in Your Delivery Hospital Bag?

The hospital or birth center may provide gowns, but you deserve to feel like YOU, not just a patient. While the hospital gown is meant for labor that doesn’t mean you have to wear it. Pack a loose, comfy nightgown or two or three, preferably something you don’t mind getting messy (because, hey, birth is real life!). Expect that during birth it will be ruined and you will need to change into something shortly after. Even what you change into should be something that could potentially be ruined because your body will be in recovery from birth so expect bodily fluid, blood, and whatever else that could be a result of birth. If you plan to breastfeed, look for tops with easy access for skin-to-skin time.

What Paperwork For Your Birth is Essential in Your Hospital Bag?

Nobody wants to be fumbling for papers when they’re in labor. Showing up to the hospital and having to fill out forms during contractions will feel like a fail and your patience will be nil. Make sure your hospital or birth center registration papers are packed. Have them somewhere that is quick to grab. We made the mistake of having them in my purse when I last delivered and where was my purse… in the car with my husband while they wheeled me in by myself.

Best case scenario register prior to delivery. (Trust me, I thought I was already registered, I had been to the hospital 5 times prior to delivery for iron transfusions… only to realize that i still had to undergo the same questions but this time during labor.)

Check with the hospital or birthing center to find out protocols. Accept that it will be like that when you deliver. Put the papers in your lap as they will you in.

Include your ID, insurance card, and a copy of your birth plan. (Yes, mama! If you’ve written a birth plan, make sure to have multiple copies on hand for your care team.) Place your birth plan on the board with all you other details. If it’s a front and back copy bring in multiples. They may not think to flip the paper over because you’ll labor so much at home it will be go time when you finally get to the hospital.

How to Include Your Comfort Zone in Your Hospital Bag?

If music, essential oils, or a favorite blanket help you relax, make space for them in your bag. Some mamas love the calming vibes of lavender or the soft glow of LED candles. You’re creating your own safe haven, even if it’s a hospital room. So, think of what brings you comfort and peace, and pack it up! Remind your birthing partner and doula to pull them out. The hospital staff will be in the midst of connecting IVs, trying to get blood, making you use the bathroom, asking you questions, that creating a vibe may not be on the list of priorities. This in no way to say that they don’t care, it’s just they’re more concerned about your blood pressure and the baby’s heart beat.

Make sure you download a playlist of songs or affirmations that keep you centered and empowered and that you connect to the hospitals WiFi. This shouldn’t be a big lift, it’s just that your music may not play with your phone relying solely on a cell signal.

What Snacks to Bring To Your Delivery in Your Hospital Bag?

Labor is a marathon, not a sprint, and your energy matters! Pack light snacks that will give you a quick boost. Think trail mix, fruit, granola bars, or whatever you can stomach. I enjoyed honey sticks, Gatorade, and ginger snaps. At this point your doing the most miraculous thing ever this is not the time to stress of what exactly your putting into your tank. Just don’t get crazy.

Also don’t forget snacks for your birth partner too—they’ll need fuel to support you fully. Even after baby arrives, a snack stash can be a lifesaver. Some hospitals have policies on eating during labor, so check in advance what’s allowed. If your having an epidural just note water and food is cut off upon insertion. There are some things like ice chips, popsicles and the likes that are available to you as well. Tell your doula and birth partner to advocate for you before hand.

What Toiletries & Self-Care Items Will You Need In Your Hospital Bag?

Hospitals have basics, but I’m all about feeling your best, even during labor. Pack your go-to toiletries—think toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, face wipes, and lip balm. Birth can dry your lips, and no one needs that. If you love a certain body lotion or a hair tie that actually holds up, toss them in! Think scents that make you feel confident or calm. It’s all about what you want to feel during your birth. Only you can determine what works best.

Also think about the things you would need after birth You are doing the hardest thing in your life… up to this point. The hospital staff will wake you up every hour to see if you need anything. Include so self care items like under eye masks, sugar scrubs, and masks for your feet. You will be in bed for the next 15 days so get comfortable. You will be laying down, resting, feeding baby, changing diapers, etc… from your bed so learn to relax now.

Yes, you have to get back to life, you have to get back to your other kids, you have to get back to dinner and laundry and school drop offs and… but not today. Before you overwhelm yourself with all those details take a look at the postpartum planning and planner so that you can take some of that anxiety off of your plate. Expect to put your allies and lifelines to work while you heal…its the only way. Want to learn more about how your postpartum care and routines impact your actual health in the long run just check out this article.

But for now…think of what you can do to help uplift your spirits, your calm, and your energy so that you can eventually do all the things.

In the same sense, don’t forget those pads and comfy undies (though the hospital provides them too). If it applies be sure to throw in a little makeup or skincare if it’ll make you feel refreshed post-birth, but no pressure—you’ll look radiant no matter what!

Which Outfit for Baby Do I Pack in My Hospital Bag?

Your little one deserves something cute and cozy for their first day out in the world! Pack a couple of onesies (newborn and 0-3 months) and a cozy blanket. Don’t forget a hat and mittens to keep them warm. It’s also wise to pack an extra outfit or two. I want you to think of what they change into once they have had their first bath, perhaps what you want them to wear when the hospital photographer makes their rounds, then finally what they wear to go home. Newborns are absolutely perfect but expect something to go awry. They may make a mess, pee or poop on something, you may spill food on an outfit or who knows what can happen. So be prepared, 3-4 outfits minimum.

What Going Home Outfit Do I Pack in My Hospital Bag?

Choose something comfy for the trip home. You are still open, you are bleeding, you are sore, you are emotionally on a high, your adrenaline if thumping in your space of being hypervigilant with a newborn that has just left your body. You want to wear something comfortable on your way home. Shoes that feel good to you. Clothes that have the perfect amount of elastic and softness to them. Something easy to get in and out of. Trust me—your pre-pregnancy jeans can wait. Go for stretchy leggings, a maxi dress, or anything that makes you feel cozy. Your body will still be adjusting, so comfort is key.

Should I Include My Tech & Chargers in My Hospital Bag For My Birth?

Pack your phone charger (extra long cords are best in hospitals!) and, if you want, a camera to capture those first moments. If your plan on bringing a tablet or apple watch, a speaker or laptop, just make sure to bring the chargers that go with them. also you may want to bring a journal or notebook. It could be handy too if you want to jot down your thoughts or your baby’s birth story while it’s fresh. This would be the perfect time to brain dump and get everything out of your head on onto paper. You have enough to worry about, get it all out. Postpartum depression is the next thing to concern yourself with so it is best to be proactive.

What Else Should I Include In My Hospital Bag?

A Few Extras (If You Have Space!)

  • A water bottle (hydration is essential)
  • Flip-flops for the shower
  • Nursing pillow (if you plan to breastfeed)
  • Your favorite pillow from home for extra comfort
